White Bubble Flowers is a sculptural lighting fixture.

Drawing inspiration from the works of plant hunters and travelling botanical artists like Sydney Parkinson and Marianne North, Roberto Cambi created an imaginary new specimen which mimics the biomorphic forms, textures and patterned arrangements that exist in nature.
A cluster of lamps is enveloped by a collection of white glazed ceramic flowers, fruits, leaves and eye bulbs.

Keeping in mind the awe and amazement that those first explorers must have felt seeing an exotic plant for the first time, he set to work on a project which would combine architectural lighting design with biophilic design, a practice very close to his heart.
The word biophilia literally means a love of life or living things.
First used by psychologist Erich Fromm in 1964, it was popularised by American biologist Edward O Wilson in 1984 and entered mainstream culture in 2011 with a multimedia project by singer Björk in partnership with Apple, National Geographic and David Attenborough.
Whilst the term may be relatively new, the concept certainly is not.
People have been intuitively aware of it since ancient times because of a deeply ingrained attraction to nature and a biological need for contact with the natural world.

White Bubble Flowers aims to integrate nature and natural elements, materials and forms into architecture and interiors.

The position of the various ceramic elements around a core eliminates visual glare, only emitting reflected light by obscuring the light source to minimise the adverse effects of direct artificial light on people in a domestic or working environment.
Its biophilic design not only works with a material such as clay, which already holds strong green credentials, but expands the scope of the object beyond its lighting function to introduce a manageable, yet constant engagement with nature.
The bubbles with two openings double as vessels for plants, especially epiphyte species due to their minimal water and soil requirements.
The ones with a single opening can become a nest box for small to medium-size birds like robins and starlings or even host a small colony of sparrows if the fixture is located in an open sheltered space like a porch or a canopy.

As a living and breathing design, White Bubble Flowers acts as a catalyst, at once being at the centre of the attention, but also acting as a defuse stimulus providing an attention restoration effect.

White Bubble Flowers is approx. 200cm wide, 200cm deep and 370cm high
